The Anti Mondays Sit-At-Home Project by the Governor of Enugu State- Barr Peter Mba, which began on Monday 5th June 2023, was at first met with mixed feelings.
While majority of Enugu State residents wanted the ill and anti-productive Sit-at-home, enforced by a rogue faction of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), to stop, residents at the same time doubted if the newly sworn in governor can stop it.
The first few weeks seemed unproductive, in terms of compliance by residents, in spite of the presence of Military Personnel deployed and spread across SOME PARTS of the state, especially within Enugu Metropolis.
However, by the end of June and early July, increasing number of residents started gaining confidence to comply.
Nevertheless, the gradual success suddenly suffered a set-back, when in early July, shortly after people started feeling like the governor’s project is going to be a success, that a 10 Days Sit-at home was ordered by the same rogue faction of IPOB.
Although the state government increased the deployment of military personnel during that period, it was not sufficient. A few cases of attacks by the illegal body occurred. In a particular amateur video that went viral during the first week of the illegal 10 days sit-at-home period, a group of PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS, who were taking their First School Leaving Certificate Examination and one of their teachers were seen laid down, flogged and told never to obey the government.
Until now, the state was not told if the aforementioned school and other places and individuals attacked were visited nor given any sort of consolation and compensation by the government that told them to go to school or work.
Based on the foregoing, compliance to the anti sit-at-home state order by Enugu Residents declined. It didn’t stop. It only decline; reason being that the government, so far, has not provided SUFFECIENT SECURITY for the residents being asked to comply.
THE SUDDEN WEIRD EVIL AND BLOODY TWIST
In the third week of July particularly, PRIVATE BUSINESS OWNERS in Markets, Big Shopping Complexes, such as Enugu Stadium Shopping Complex and their likes within Enugu State, were given DIRECT NOTICE by Enugu State Government, ORDERING them to start opening their Offices and Shops on Mondays, with immediate effect, otherwise have their Offices and Shops Sealed/ Locked-up by the government.
Many Private Business Owners interpreted the Notice as laughable and disregarded it, owing to the fact that such order is TOTALLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL and a VIOLATION OF THEIR FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS. They are working for themselves, not the state, many of them said. Besides, the State Government has not done enough to protect them, when previously they obeyed.
SHOCKINGLY however, on Monday, 24th July, 2023, the Peter Mbah-led Enugu State Government started to enforce it’s threat by locking up the Offices and Shops of Monday-absent PRIVATE BUSINESS OWNERS across the state, especially at Ogbete Main Market, situated in Enugu Metropolis. The Traders said that they were asked to pay Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000) by the government before their ILLEGALLY LOCKED-UP SHOPS would be unlocked. The government also locked-up big shopping complexes, such as Eastern Shop, Four Market Days and more.
As if such violation of human right was not enough, some of the Enforcement Personnel of the state, who carried out the lock-ups shot and killed 3 Traders, who purportedly protested against the locking-up of their shops and the N200,000 Fine at Ogbete Main Market Enugu, two days later.
Sequel to the Lock-ups and Killing of the Traders, a Massive Protest was carried out by aggrieved Traders of Ogbete Main Market immediately, on Wednesday, 26th July 2023, along some of the major roads within Enugu Metropolis. Unfortunately, some “lunatic” participants of the protest, probably agents of unmentioned groups, were seen during the protest, destroying the properties of Innocent Enugu Residents, especially at Shopping Complexes.
So far, Enugu State Government have not shown remorse publicly over the unconstitutional lock-up of affected Private Offices and Shops, neither have they, over the killing of the Traders.
EFFECT OF THE NEW ILL DEVELOPMENT ON GOVERNOR PETER MBAH’S REPUTATION AND THAT OF HIS SENIOR SUPPORTERS
During gubernatorial campaigns, Governor Peter Mbah was not the popular candidate at first, especially because of the Stigma of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Most residents said they are tired of PDP Administrations in the state.
The present governor was publicly rejected at rallies during those times and a particular amateur video that went viral then shows large number of Congregants of a certain Roman Catholic Church booing the then candidate and THROWING VARIOUS SMALL OBJECTS AT HIM in disapproval.
It took the INTERVENTION of the RESPECTED and LOVED Ex Governor of Enugu State- Barrister Sullivan Iheanacho Chime (2007-2015/ Strangely PDP then) to convince many residents of Enugu to vote for Peter Mbah. The erstwhile governor- Sullivan Chime, even said to Enugu residents in different Radio Broadcasts that he is putting his reputation on the line for Barr Peter Mbah.
Peter Mbah was declared winner of the Governorship Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), although one of his fellow candidates- Hon. Barr Chijioke Edeoga of Labour Party (LP) dragged him to Election Petition Tribunal, which is still ongoing.
With the recent ill developments in the state, including incessant kidnappings, the way it has never been in Enugu State, by Fulani Criminals and in very few cases, indigenous criminals, residents of the state have started murmuring seriously and grievously against Governor Peter Mbah, just TWO MONTHS into his Administration. Personally, I wonder what Ex Governor Sullivan Chime would be thinking by now.
